Cambodia, located in Southeast Asia, is bordered by Vietnam to the east, Laos to the north, and Thailand to the west. Home to approximately 17 million people, the nation is 97% Buddhist and relies heavily on agriculture, particularly rice farming. Cambodians are known for their humility, resilience, and deep respect in daily interactions.
History of Cambodia’s Resilience
From April 17, 1975, to January 7, 1979, Cambodia endured one of the darkest chapters in modern history. Under the Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot, nearly two million people lost their lives in a brutal campaign to create a so-called “classless utopia.” Millions were forced from their homes to labor in the countryside, and countless others were executed or buried in mass graves known today as the Killing Fields.
The regime was ultimately overthrown after a Vietnamese invasion, but years of civil war followed. It took almost three decades before Khmer Rouge leaders were brought to justice. Even today, Cambodia continues to rebuild from the loss of nearly one-eighth of its population — a tragedy that forever shaped the nation’s identity and spirit.
Cambodia Missions Today
Despite its painful past, Cambodia stands as a nation of renewal. Through ongoing Cambodia missions, organizations like Bridges for Life Ministries support local churches and communities by offering education, leadership training, and outreach programs that bring both practical aid and spiritual hope. These efforts not only help rebuild infrastructure but also empower Cambodians to shape a brighter future rooted in faith and unity.
